The School Fund

The School Fund is a non-profit started by youth on a mission to ensure that any student, no matter where she is born, can attend school. To realize this vision, The School Fund is tapping into the power, creativity, and generosity of high school and college students. Globally, 70 million children cannot afford to attend school. Since 2009, youth volunteers at The School Fund have helped 200 students from 13 countries continue their education and achieve their full potential.

In 2007, Matt Severson, a high school senior from California, travelled to Tanzania where he met a boy named John Medo. John told Matt that he dreamed of becoming the President of Tanzania, but he couldn’t afford to pay the government fees of $150 per year to attend high school. Matt gave John enough to pay his school fees and started cultivating the seed of an idea that would become The School Fund.

As a sophomore at Brown University in 2009, Matt and two friends launched www.theschoolfund.org with 32 students from Tanzania, including John. Matt wanted to help donors experience the same connection with students in Tanzania that he felt meeting John, so the website allows students to communicate directly with their donors each month in online journals. The School Fund has grown rapidly over the last two and a half years, relying completely on the efforts of youth volunteers in college and high school.

The School Fund is working to continue its tradition of students helping students by connecting peers across cultures, and combining learning with service.  Visit www.theschoolfund.org/schools to learn more about how to get students and schools involved in the global conversation.

Children, Inc & Jefferson Collaboration!

posted Nov 8, 2011 11:09 AM by Melanie Gonsecki

Children, Inc. is proud to be a national partner of the Jefferson Awards for Public Service. This community based non-profit operates a number of educational programs in Covington, Northern Kentucky. Children, Inc.’s Service Learning Program utilizes the Jefferson Awards recognition system to reward participants for their service to the community. This Service Learning Program provides training, resources, curriculum development, funding, community connections, and evaluation for teachers and schools throughout Greater Cincinnati to implement service learning projects in classes. During the 2010-2011 school year, there were over 22,500 students that completed a service learning project as part of this program.

Children, Inc., along with other local partners such as the Greater Cincinnati United Way and
The Greater Cincinnati Y, organize the annual National Youth Service Summit conference in
Cincinnati, Ohio. With national partners like Youth Service America, the Jefferson Awards,
andUGIVE.ORG, we are able to coordinate an outstanding conference experience for youth from
around the country. This conference is uniquely designed for youth that are passionate about
service and service learning. During the weekend, youth attendees participate in direct service
to the community. This demonstration and celebration of their service, along with leadership
development workshops, help them not only make a difference now, but continue to make a
difference into the future.

The Youth Service Challenge is on!

Every day, we have more schools, more youth organizations, more celebrities and more Mayors (of cities large and small, all across America) saying "YES" to the Youth Service Challenge.

Yesterday, on our Jefferson Awards blog and on our Facebook fan page, we published our Youth Service Challenge Checklist.

If you're already part of the Jefferson Awards Students In Action program, and you're working on service projects (either through your school, your church, a youth organization or on your own), you're already doing everything that qualifies you for further recognition as part of the Youth Service Challenge, and gives you the opportunity to win cash prizes and/or celebrity visits to your school / service project.

BUT (there is always a but, isn't there?), if you don't register on the Youth Service Challenge website, and then tell us about your project, we don't know about the great things you're doing.

So... please take 10-15 minutes to register and tell us about your project.

Also, visit the Youth Service Challenge fan page on Facebook, and like us. That way, you'll be able to easily keep up with some of the other great things that other schools and youth groups are doing.

Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve.

posted Feb 3, 2011 9:16 AM by Karen Hatcher

From Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on service:

"Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve.  You don't have to have a college degree to serve.  You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve.  You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love."

Houston Says "YES" To Youth Service Challenge & Students In Action

posted Dec 2, 2010 8:44 AM by Robert Ford   [ updated Dec 2, 2010 9:05 AM ]

Houston isn't one of our Leadership Communities yet, but in 2011 they will be! Yes, say hello to the next city that will be welcoming the Students In Action program next summer.

In the meantime, Mayor Annise Parker and her staff have committed to getting 100,000 young Houstonians involved in the Youth Service Challenge.

The pictures are from the recent inauguration of the 2010-11 Mayor's Youth Council. Members are called upon to help make decisions affecting Houston's youth, as well as participate in numerous community outreach activities throughout the year, including making the Youth Service Challenge a big success in Houston!

At last.. here is our new Students In Action website

posted Nov 15, 2010 1:39 PM by Robert Ford

Okay, so the paint might not be quite dry yet, but come on in and make yourself at home.

The idea behind our new website is that we'd like to showcase all the great things that schools participating in the Students In Action youth leadership program are doing.

So, if you want to tell people all about the great things that you are doing in your schools and in your communities, let your Regional Director know!
